Elk Hunting in Nebraska

Elk was historically found throughout North America but it has been extirpated from Nebraska and much of the Great Plains in the 1880s due to consumptive uses by miners, settlers, market hunters, and others. Elk began to reappear in Nebraska in the 1960s, and then established a stable, non-migratory population that currently consists of seven (7) herds and an estimated 1,400 individuals throughout central and western Nebraska. The subsequent persistence and reappearance of elk in Nebraska suggest there is sufficient habitat to support a self-sustaining population.

However, If we talk about the general movement of elk eastward may lead to an eventual statewide distribution, and populations being established in states to the east and south of Nebraska, where elks populations were historically present and suitable habitat still exists. If we examined published historic accounts, museums, archeological records, and current literature to determine the historic and current distribution of elk in Nebraska and the Great Plains than we will find that Nebraska does not have a huge elk herd, but it does have several trophy bulls. In other facts and figures shows that there are an estimated 1 million elk throughout the contiguous 48 states of those, only 3,000 or so are in Nebraska.
