Elk Hunting Season in New Mexico

Season dates vary by zone. New Mexico elk hunters can obtain a private-land hunt or public draw hunt permit, but not both in the same year. All licenses must be applied for by March each year. Where to Hunt Elk in New Mexico

Elk Hunting in New Mexico, both units 13 & 17 have the best draw odds. Both produce a portion of trophy bull elks every year. Both become the best-known places for big game hunting. GMU 13 is 7,500 feet height with rough terrain & Rocky Mountains.

These areas within Forest consistently produce the best bulls in New Mexico.

New Mexico Elk Hunting Legal Firearms

Any of the applicants who are convicted felon according to the New Mexico Law shall be restricted to the use of archery equipment only.  As Per New Mexico statute 30-7-16 NMSA 1978, firearm includes any rifle, handgun, shotgun or muzzleloader.

  • Any Centerfire firearm at least (.22) caliber or larger.
  • Any Muzzle-loading firearm at least (.45) caliber or larger.
  • Any shotgun (.410) caliber or larger, Firing a single slug (including muzzle-loading shotguns), any bow or any crossbow.
  • All firearms, except handguns, must be designed to be fired from the shoulder. Elk hunters must be used only bullets designed to expand or fragment upon impact.
  • Tracer Bullets & Full metal jacket “FMJ” are illegal.
  • No fully automatic firearms may be used. Arrows and bolts must have broad heads “fixed or mechanical” with cutting edges. Sights on bows and crossbows may not project light (lighted pins are acceptable). No drugs may be used on arrows or bolts, and they cannot be driven by explosives, gunpowder or compressed air.
